It’s heartbreaking to hear and read about majestic rhinos being slaughtered left and right by poachers who want their horns. It’s more heartbreaking to know a baby rhino orphan was found grieving next to its dead mother. ‘It was a devastating sight, as the tiny animal would not leave her side, and was crying inconsolably for her’, wrote the rescuers at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre in South Africa. So much feels, you guys.
Gertjie, the orphan rhino was so shocked – who wouldn’t? – he had a hard time sleeping at night.
So caretakers, along with a surrogate sheep named Skapp, bunked in with him. So far, Gertjie is moving on from the horrific incident, taking walks around the sanctuary twice a day and going on relaxing mud bath.
If you were moved by Gertjie’s rescue story, you can donate to the HESC for his fat-free milk expenses.
