An investigative Guardian report has revealed that Thai fishing boats where workers are enslaved, brutalized and even killed play a pivotal role in the global shrimp supply business. The Thailand-based Charoen Pokphand (CP) Foods buys fishmeal from these boats where slaves are forced to work for no pay and under threat of extreme violence.
The fishmeal is then fed to the company’s farmed prawns, which are then sold in supermarkets around the world, including the top four global retailers: Walmart, Carrefour, Costco and Tesco. Some slaves who have escaped from boats supplying CP Foods and similar companies have broke their silence on 20-hour shifts, regular beatings, torture and execution-style killings.
Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, said: “We are actively engaged in this issue and playing an important role in bringing together stakeholders to help eradicate human trafficking from Thailand’s seafood export sector." Carrefour said it has tightened up it’s social audit process after alerts in 2012 but has admitted that it did not check right to the end of its complex chains. We say it’s about time we do something by boycotting these products linked to such fishing boats.
