It may look like Thomas The Tank-Engine’s evil Russian uncle Boris The Bus, but it’s actually so much more! Developed by Uralvagonzavod, a high-tech tank manufacturer, this is the latest addition to the Russian public transport system. Dubbed R1, or Russa One, the street-train was revealed at the 2014 Innoprom Tech-Expo earlier this week.
All hard angles, sheer surfaces, dark-tinted glass and ominous red lights, the R1 certainly has very little in common with the London Routemaster bus but certainly has the potential to become equally iconic. Surprisingly the interiors are designed with comfort in mind, cutting the number of seats per carriage to only 28 in order to give passengers more room for both sitting and standing.
Various features include an internal power supply that allow the R1 to keep running even after a power cut and heated plates to help the tram cope with harsh Russian climates. The prototype is set to be launched in the remote Ekaterinburg in the Urals Region, but the R1 should be in use across the country in time for Russia to host the next FIFA World Cup.
