Snakes alive! We’re talking about 75,000 of them in one single space
Welcome to the Narcisse Snake Dens of Manitoba, Canada where you’ll witness the world’s largest gathering of snakes. We’re talking as many as 75,000 of them and nowhere else do they congregate in such great numbers. Each spring, these huge masses of red-sided garter snakes congregate inside the limestone caves to mate.
The smaller size males court the larger female by rubbing her head with their chins and maintaining as much contact between their long bodies as possible. Up to a hundred male snakes can vie for the attention of a single female.
The snake dens attract some 3,000 to 4,000 people a day during mating season. Visitors view the snakes by walking on a boardwalk and are encouraged to pick one snake up at a time. They’re totally harmless and only emit a bodily fluid on you if startled. It’s not feces, but unfortunately, it smells just as bad.
