The Paintboxer, where fine art meets untamed aggression

The Paintboxer, where fine art meets untamed aggression
In a world of post-modernism and abstract art, it is perhaps not so surprising to behold new forms of expression emerging from the most unlikely places. Having said that, it was wholly unexpected but equally delightful to stumble across The Paintboxer. Dutch artist and boxer Bart van Polanen Petel is the creativity and the force behind Paintboxer, a new approach to painting. Speaking about his medium, Bart has this to say:
‘If life is ultimately a Darwinian struggle for survival, then boxing at least has the virtue of being open about it. Inspired by its primal nature, I pay tribute. Instead of crushing bones and shattering teeth, I use my fists to create. I use exclusively boxing techniques, with real boxing gloves. No brush allowed. On canvas, wrapped around a bag. Bagwork. An explosive expression of emotions. Fear, aggression, anger. Pounding hooks and hammering uppercuts move paint on canvas. What remains is an echo of the beast within’.
Frankly we think this is great, each of Bart’s canvases has the added value of having literally suffered a double dose of his physical and creative expression, having to withstand dozens of punches, each one adding the equivalent of a brush stroke. If he’s up for it, we’d like Bart to take a whirl at painting the living room… providing he doesn’t throw a roundhouse right through the plasterwork.
