Some say the eyes are the window to the soul, but looking at Dimitra Williams’ Human Mouth series, you might think otherwise. Taking inspiration from her favourite photographers (Robert Mapplethorpe, Gary Winogrand, Peter Yang, and Laura Domela to name a few), Williams has created a unique and eye-catching collection of photos that touch on the differences of humans, yet their similarities.
The mouth is a place where language comes from, a place where we feed ourselves and a place where we express emotions–whether good or bad. These pictures, though simple, illustrate the power of one human body part, and the effects they can have on our everyday lives.
Dimitra Williams is from Portland, Oregon and a recent graduate of SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design). Her main focus has always been black & white fine art photography with subject matters focusing on human form.
