While most artists, past and present, would subdue an entire block of marble to their will, carving nature into a human or architectural form entirely, British stone carver Matthew Simmonds does the opposite. He encases timeless Greek and Roman architectural interiors in inescapable frames of nature. It’s a totally different perspective of seeing and appreciating these iconic structures.
Simmonds, who was once an art historian before moving to Italy to pursue sculpting, pays tribute to the beauty of these ancient buildings by recreating them in miniature form. His works include ancient Roman temples, baroque basilicas, and their features like Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns.
