And we can see why. The 26th World’s Ugliest Dog contest held at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California just wrapped up and 2-year-old rescue dog, Peanut, bagged the esteemed honor with his dashing grin, eye-popping peepers, and beautiful fur.
Holly Chandler, owner of Peanut, says that the lovable dog didn’t always look this way. When he was just a puppy, Peanut suffered from animal abuse and was severely injured in a fire. ‘He doesn’t have lips anymore’, Chandler says. ‘His eyelids are also gone, and so he can’t close his eyes, so therefore his eyes water. The tears drain into his nose and so he has nice little snot bubbles because of it. So it’s great, that adds to his character’.
She adds that behind the ugly face lies a dog with a beautiful personality. ‘He’s my baby’, she said. ‘I guess I don’t see him every day as being that ugly. But I guess the judges thought so’.
The $1,500 prize money will help pay other rescued animals’ veterinary bills. Chandler also hopes Peanut will serve as a reminder of the horrors of animal abuse.
