‘The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see Nature all ridicule and deformity…and some scarce see Nature at all. But to the eyes of a man of Imagination, Nature is Imagination itself.’ This quote by William Blake is cited on the portfolio of Rogan Brown, a talented artist who specialises in the painstaking and arduous discipline of sculpting from paper.
His most recent installation work, Outbreak, took over four months of imagining, cutting and assembling to create. From layers upon layers of intricately shaped paper, London-educated Brown creates sculptural forms of the natural world. From the cells of plant-matter to the tiniest microbes imaginable, he incorporates biological aesthetics into his work to create a unique result somewhere between science and representational art.
On his Saatchi Art profile Brown explains: ‘Inspired by scientific illustration and model making I invent imaginary organic forms and carve them out of layered handcut sheets of paper. I seek to convey the immense detail and intricacy of the natural world and to evoke that sense of wonder that a child experiences when looking through a microscope for the first time’.
