One man is on a quest to buy a collection of signs from the homeless
Since 1993, Willie Baronet has been buying and collecting homeless signs. Now, decades later, he has acquired hundreds of signs – crumpled signs, colourful signs, signs of heartache, and signs that are also hilarious. The reason Baronet is collecting these signs? To stay connected to the people around him. And to also make a point – that homeless people are not invisible.
‘My point is to put the art out there. My point is to start conversations and raise awareness. My point is to keep learning about me. And that’s a selfish point’, he says. Baronet estimates that he’s spent about $7,000 collecting homeless signs during the past 21 years. That’s a lot of money! And Willie plans to buy even more while on his 31-day coast-to-coast ‘We are all Homeless’ trip, which was a crowdfunding success.
