You’ve dressed your best, behaved impeccably and just before your interview for a civil servant’s position ended, they asked: ‘When did you have your first period?’ and ‘Do you experience abdominal pain during menstruation?’ These seemingly irrelevant questions about their menstrual cycles during the federal government’s screening process for female applicants were enough to make the latter see red.
Some of them compared notes and decided to protest about these standard but extremely personal questions in front of a ministry building in Wuhan, China. They were also upset that they had to take a pap smear in addition to their standard physical examination. Would other orifices be next? Their demonstration led to a massive discussion on China’s micro-blogging site Sina Weibo and has also expanded into international media coverage. One can only wonder if it could possibly be research for some anti-menstrual cramp medication the Chinese state is planning to launch in the near future.
