If the weather is right, this arid Utah desert bursts into spectacular colour

If the weather is right, this arid Utah desert bursts into spectacular colour
In the South and East areas of the vast State of Utah lie sprawling national parks, cliffs and deserts that are devoid of any plant life save a few moisture grabbing shrubs. Largely known as The Badlands, this region barely seems to belong on planet Earth, seeming more like a vista from Mars.

Once a year, however, as long as the weather conditions are just right, this arid stone-scape bursts into life with sweeping fields of Scorpion Weed, Beeplant at the flowers of the Pincushion Cacti. Swathes of yellow and the distinctive purple of the Scorpion Weed battle with the grey and brown tones of the earth and rock. Indicative of the harsh quality of The Badlands, despite being an attractive bloom, the flower of the Scorpion Weed will leave a nasty stinging rash if touched.

Photographer created a series several years ago that documented this glorious change, entitled The Good
Badlands. Photos 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 11 are from this series.
