Go to Athens for the incredible history and architecture. For the food. For the people. But go to also meet a world-renowned poet, who just happens to be a sandal maker, too. The Poet Sandal Maker of Athens, as Stavros Melissinos is called, has worked on crafting sandals all his life and today he and his son make sandals ‘inspired by the ancients’, including Aristotle, Hermes, Plato, and Socrates.
And you can forget about Melissinos being just an everyday poet. This 85-year-old sandal maker’s poetry can be found in books in both Harvard and Oxford University libraries. So you might’ve lost the chance to meet James Joyce and Edgar Allen Poe, but being able to cross paths with a living poetry legend, in Athens of all places – seems like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
