Hard to believe but, Paris-based illustrator Nicolas Delort brings colorful characters to life using only black and white illustrations! The French-Canadian artist masterfully illustrates vast worlds and mysterious scenes by using a technique called scratchboard, wherein he applies black ink to a surface then etches it off to expose the white surface beneath.
This style of illustration takes the traditional ink-on-paper process and puts it in reverse, making the artist focus more around the negative space than the positive space on the canvas.
Despite the absence of color, Delort gives us images that tell so much with so little. You can see more of Nicolas Delort’s amazing artworks here.
