This coffee table lets you see the depths of the ocean using layers of glass and wood
Amaze and stupefy your house guests by showing them your coffee table has a magical portal, which leads you to the dark, mysterious depths of the ocean! Furniture design studio ‘Duffy London’ stacked together different glass- and wooden- sheets, creating a sort of optical illusion inside a table. Called ‘The Abyss Table’, it highly resembles geological map of the sea, except this one is much cooler at 3D!
‘I was looking into sheets of thick glass at my glass manufacturer’s factory, and noticed how the material darkened as they added more layers—the same way the sea does as it deepens’, recalls Christopher Duffy. ‘I wanted to use this effect to replicate a real piece of the earth’s sea bed. Like a mythical power had lifted a perfect rectangle straight from the earth’s crust to use as his personal ornament’.
Owning an illusionary ocean/coffee table, though, comes at a price. A steep one. The Abyss Table has a price tag of £5,800 (about $10,000), dashing all our hopes of having a really cool conversation piece.
