Have you ever spared a thought about the origins of our oceans? Some geologists have made it their job to do so and a few have long postulated that these vast amounts of water may have come from icy comets that landed on Earth. This proposal have recently been refuted by an opposing group who claimed they have found evidence that oceans came from water inside the planet that just so happened to seep to the surface.
A team of geologists, led by Steven Jacobsen from Northwestern University, has discovered a vast body of water, said to be approximately three times the size of any ocean, and located near the earth’s core, 700 km deep below the earth’s surface or mantle, which is the layer of hot rock underneath the earth’s surface. They are understandably excited about this find as the body of water possesses the ideal temperature and pressure for the water to ooze out, ‘almost as if it’s sweating’, Jacobsen says.
