Austrian artist Alfredo Barsuglia has done something slightly audacious by bringing public art to a space where the public will need to hunt for it: he built a lux eleven-by-five-feet wide pool in the Southern California desert.
Anyone is welcome to find this remote piece of art that they can swim in, but it won’t be easy: they need to obtain a special key to unlock the pool (it is otherwise covered) from the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, and then hunt the spot down in a journey that will take several hours on the road, including a long walk at the last leg to get to the pool from the nearest road.
The idea, said Barsuglia to the LA Times, is to get people to think about consumption: ‘I’m interested in the way that these (pools) are often integrated into the architecture of a house. And, often, people will have a pool, but they don’t even get into it. They just like to show that they have it. It shows they don’t have to think about water’.
