This photo series isn’t one for the squeamish. Or the vegetarians. Photographer Catherine Chalmers has created a collection of images of animals, well, eating other animals in Food Chain. Taking a predator and placing it by its prey, Chalmers was able to watch nature take its course as praying mantises ate caterpillars, toads ate mice and caterpillars, and snakes ate mice.
Chalmers believes her work is one of discovery and illuminates what she thinks is important: ‘Today, most of us live an urban existence and the grocery store is one of the few links we have to a food chain. When nature and culture meet today, they often collide in a nexus of confusion, and fear’.
Her ultimate wish is to ‘broaden the cultural significance of the non-human world’ and to see us all rooting for a healthy ecosystem. That’s all well and good but I’m not too sure I like the idea of breeding creatures to watch them die in photographs. It’s definitely quirky, but you’d hate to come in your next life back as an insect and feature in one of Chalmers’ photo series!
